Reply To: Cheap generic PS3 wireless controller problem

I agree. I would really like to use this one. I was able to configure it to work while wired, although the file it says it created does not seem to exist in the folder it states it is in. So that is odd. But I cannot get it to sync with any bluetooth dongle. The file for mine is SHENGHIC2009/0708ZXW-V1Inc.PLAYSTATION(R)3Conteroller.cfg for what its worth.
I works nicely wired. If only I could figure out the bluetooth part.

Just an idea, but I wonder what would happen if you modified the MAME build that you used to get your PS3 controllers working (the one to which you linked originally in this thread), and increased the number of allowed buttons in that one to 34?

I have no idea what I’m talking about, so it may not be possible or feasible, or a high enough probability of success to be worth the time and effort. Just throwing out ideas!

Again, I appreciate the help you’ve already given, so no worries if you don’t want to mess with it any further. I completely understand.

It works ok for me with snes controllers plugged in but not with PS3 controllers. Oh well it was worth a try!

I enabled 28 axis and 34 buttons so I think we can say its not a lack of inputs that is keeping it from working!

I had some knock off n64 controllers and the axis buttons were really finicky so when I would press up it would press up and right- i had to be real careful with each button press to make sure I only got the one I needed otherwise it would say it was taken already. Its possible yours may be similar. (It was actually the same controller name too- dragonrise generic USB.)

The mame4all binary only allows 6 axis for each controller, the PS3 sixaxis controller actually has 23 axis so it doesn’t work.

A workaround was found that fixed this by just removing the bit of code that checks for the axis and recompiling. Later the author of mame4all updated the source to allow up to 23 axis but compiling the latest version of the code didn’t work for me, maybe squid typod or something.

There is a precompiled version here https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2TfYq5Awz_jWExLS2RpMHhnalE/view?usp=sharing that I put in /opt/retropie/emulators/mame4all/ and it works for me (this is retropie 3)

Forgive my noobness here but I have got the files from that precompiled version and replaced both files (after backing up of course):

/opt/retropie/configs/mame-mame4all/mame.cfg
/opt/retropie/emulators/mame4all/mame

Is this all I need to do? mame4all isn’t loading though. The screen just goes black when I fire up a rom, then takes me back to the rom selection page.

I’ve also tried reverting back to the original mame.cfg and using the new ‘mame’ file.

What am I doing wrong? I’m guessing it’s something stoopid!

Thanks

yes, using retropie-v3.0rc1-rpi2.
i dont’t understand it. the controller works everywhere. when i setup the controller, it realizes all buttons. start, select, up, down, … and i can play all games with it.
but the “console-select-screen” hates my controller. there is only keyboard allowed :(
new controller setup doesn’t work. controller setup and rebot doesn’t work, too.
always same prob, no controller @ “console-select-screen”

It could have something to do with it not registering the characters of your gamepad Id properly in emulationstation- when I run my virtual gamepad as an app and try and configure it with emulationstation it shows up with text characters emulation station can’t reconcile so it just doesn’t work, but idk- it could be something else entirely.

Have you made the binary executable? Try chmod +x mame

I had the same problem. You’ll need to adjust your rom directory in the mame.cfg file to point towards the RetroPie rom path.

rompath=/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-mame4all

Provided you’re using the default location I suppose. Also, you’ll need to point to the RetroPie config path too.

cfg=/opt/retropie/configs/mame-mame4all

I hope that helps.

I haven’t heard of anyone else having this issue. I have not upgraded my version since when I uploaded the last kernel. Are you getting any type of output/error?

new install, ES crashes when trying to configure controller

Total newbie question but this is how it is.

Got my raspberry pi model B+ version 1.2
running retro pi version 2.6, V1

Got the image expanded onto an 8GB micro SD card, booted and loaded ok
Got to the ES screen where it asks to push a button on the controller, sits and crashes after about 20 Seconds and restarts

I am running a generic joystick and button kit with a USB interface card, Seems like it went together pretty smooth,

Tried a PS3 controller as well, same issue, when you push a button to configure it it crashes, if you just leave it idle for 20 + seconds it crashes.

I hit F4 and came out to the console in ES and its staying up and running so I assume its not hardware?

I am used to working with windows and Novell, this is a bit outside my norm.

Are you allowed to have multiple rom paths so for example, mame can use my negoeo roms folder so i dont have to have duplicates?

Hey Mavic, I’m having the same issue. I’ve done both setups (manually and setup script) and I get nothing in the way of controls/ability to setup using the standard controller setup that starts up. I’m replying to this topic so that hopefully someone will look at it and post back for us.

If anyone happens to know if the instructions are missing steps or possibly just happen to not work in 3.0 then please just let us know.

PS3 Controller Defaults to Player 2

I managed to get my PS3 controller working wirelessly thanks to Floob’s excellent YouTube tutorial but when I unplug the USB cable and press the pair button the controller always lights the second LED and shows js0 & js1 in /dev/input. Everything works okay, and I’m only running one controller right now, but is there any way I can force the wirelessly paired controller to js0, and maybe delete js1?

Thanks,
Jamie.

is there another way to configure the controller? or why are the characters of my controller “not registered” ?
it seems, that it is a problem with emulationstation only. the emulators/consoles accept the controller…
maybe there is a way to copy the config from any emuator where the controller is working tho the path, where emulationstation reads the config file for the controller? u know what i mean?

Fantastico! That’s me up and running now! Well ALMOST! I last thing is that it’s not saving my inputs so if I quit the emulator I have to go back in to the TAB menu to configure the controls.

Guessing this could be a permissions issue perhaps?

there is a file called es_input.cfg that can be added manually (file path is /home/pi/.emulationstation I believe.):

This is for an xbox controller and a keyboard

You just have to modify the device name and buttons to match your own controller. you can type lsusb to see what your devicename is

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<inputList>
    <inputConfig type="keyboard" />
    <inputConfig type="joystick" deviceName="Xbox Gamepad (userspace driver)">
        <input name="a" type="button" id="4" value="1" />
        <input name="b" type="button" id="5" value="1" />
        <input name="down" type="button" id="1" value="1" />
        <input name="left" type="button" id="2" value="1" />
        <input name="menu" type="button" id="13" value="1" />
        <input name="pagedown" type="button" id="11" value="1" />
        <input name="pageup" type="button" id="10" value="1" />
        <input name="right" type="button" id="3" value="1" />
        <input name="select" type="button" id="8" value="1" />
        <input name="up" type="button" id="0" value="1" />
    </inputConfig>
    <inputConfig type="keyboard">
        <input name="a" type="key" id="13" value="1" />
        <input name="b" type="key" id="8" value="1" />
        <input name="down" type="key" id="274" value="1" />
        <input name="left" type="key" id="276" value="1" />
        <input name="menu" type="key" id="109" value="1" />
        <input name="pagedown" type="key" id="281" value="1" />
        <input name="pageup" type="key" id="280" value="1" />
        <input name="right" type="key" id="275" value="1" />
        <input name="select" type="key" id="108" value="1" />
        <input name="up" type="key" id="273" value="1" />
    </inputConfig>

yeah, thats it. in the es_input.cfg the controller was missing. only the keyboard was entered.
to get a “clean” .cfg I decided to reinstall retropie – but this time WITHOUT a keyboard. and have a look – now the startscreen can be controlled by the controller :)
maybe I will add the keyboard later.

btw: the “es_input.cfg” is stored in /home/pi/.emulationstation
